February Editor’s Note.

Dear followers,

Happy Valentine’s Day. The day that lovers celebrate their relationships by buying expensive gifts, flowers and chocolates and spend some quality time together. The original idea of Valentine’s Day is a special one but these days, it feels like an over-commercialised holiday, a money-making scheme, the chance for couples to annoy single people with their ‘lovey dovey’ selfies on social media and boast about the fancy presents they have received.

When me and my partner were younger, we did what society ‘expected’ us to do, we bought each other cards, he bought me a bunch of flowers and some chocolates and we planned something special to do together. Now I see the bigger picture. I realised that I didn’t need one day of the year to show the world how much I love my partner and I actually found it more special to receive flowers or chocolates on a day that was not assigned as a necessity by society. We celebrate our anniversary instead, which is two weeks after Valentine’s Day. It makes more sense to celebrate the day we found each other.

I encourage you to think about this day as any other. Don’t wait for February 14th to tell someone that you like them or take your partner for a romantic dinner. Don’t wait for this day to let your partner know how much you appreciate them. Break the rules! Why not spend the day with your family or friends? Meet up with a friend that you don’t see often, get your family members together and arrange a day out. Valentine’s Day is not only for couples.

There are so many ways we can love a person. Show the people you love that you don’t take them for granted. Show them that you will always be there. Be kind, be thoughtful and be loyal. Support them and listen when they need you the most. Plan a future together and enjoy every moment together. Presents shouldn’t represent how you feel about each other. Time will always be more precious than anything you can buy.

I think we can all agree that life would not be the same without love. Love brings happiness to our lives. The amazing thing about love is science cannot explain it. There is no logic explanation for the way we find another human being and love them unconditionally. Love is a mystery. Love is magic. Love is Everything. Celebrate love not only today but every single day of your life.

December 2015: Editor’s Note.

Dear followers,

The days might be long and dark but the positive energy of Christmas is growing stronger as we get closer to the 25th. There is something about Christmas that sparks a light inside of us. It’s a time to celebrate family, love and kindness. The commercialism of Christmas often overwhelms us, we get caught up in Christmas rush, stressing about buying the best presents, organising who will visit who on what day and worrying if we have enough food to feed the family.

The true meaning of Christmas is different for every individual, but to me, Christmas is a time to indulge, relax, be around the people I love and reflect on the year that has passed. Christmas is a special time of year, a time to live in the moment and count your blessings. Gifts are a great way to show your appreciation but Christmas is not a competition to see how many gadgets you can fit inside a stocking or a chance to share pictures on social media of your big pile of presents, Christmas is so much more than that.

Why not create some space in your life this Christmas for gratitude? It’s easy to get caught up in the expectations of what Christmas should be, however, it can be a lonely and emotional time for many people. Think about your elderly neighbour eating their Christmas dinner alone or the millions of homeless people who won’t experience the joy of Christmas this year. When we think of those less fortunate than ourselves, we start to appreciate everything we already have, which is a crucial part of the journey to happiness.

The new year is round the corner and the long list of resolutions will soon be created. Instead of making the same resolution that you make every year – to lose weight, quit smoking or join a gym, why not add a simple, yet achievable one to the list, ‘be more grateful.’ Focus on everything good in your life and be happy. Take life one day at a time and truly love every moment.

Thank you for following us and supporting our message to inspire others with our positive message.

Zest For Life wishes you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

November 2015: Editor’s Note.

Dear followers,

There is only one thing on everybody’s mind at the moment; the recent tragedy that happened in Paris last week. It’s hard to stay positive when we live in such a negative world, even more so, when an event such as this happens. The world often feels like a cruel and unforgiving place, but the unity and support that was displayed after the attacks, proves that although we all come from different cultures, speak different languages and have different views of the world, we are all on the same journey.

Life can be hard sometimes. The daily struggles that we all face can often become overwhelming and effect our overall happiness, but what you have to remember is that each day, when the sun rises and the moon falls, there are 1,440 minutes to change the direction of your day. The one thing I have learned in my twenty two years is that no matter how dark your day may seem, there is always a ray of light that you can cling to.

Being positive doesn’t come naturally to any of us. We need to fight for our own happiness, even if that means we have to make decisions we don’t want to make. Life is many things but one that we all forget is that life is a blessing. It can be taken away in a second and if we all spent less time focusing on where we need to go, instead of where we are, then the world would be a different place entirely, there would be more gratitude, more love and definitely more peace.

If you do one thing today, let it be this. Write a list of things that you are grateful for. It could be anything from a special person in your life, good health or having all five senses. We all have something in our lives that makes us happy, focus on that. This month, enjoy the little things that make your day brighter. The first cup of tea when you get home from work, putting on your new winter pyjamas or the first kiss from your partner after a long, hard day. Remember that even when the sky is dark, the stars continue to shine.

You might have noticed that the content on the blog has been dwindling for the past couple of weeks, there’s a reason for that. We have started creating the very first issue of Zest For Life and that leaves less time to concentrate on the blog. The magazine is looking great and I can’t wait for you all to see it, only seven weeks until it will be available on this site for you to download to your laptop, tablet or phone.

We are still looking for more writers to not only contribute for the blog but also write some pieces for the first issue. If you are interested in being a part of our team, contact us. I am so proud to be the founder of Zest For Life. It has already exceeded my expectations and I am glad that so many people want to share this journey with me, discover their own happiness and start living a positive life.

October 2015: Editor’s Note.

Dear followers,

It’s now the middle of October. The leaves may be bright, but as the darker days creep in, it’s harder to get up in the morning with the same motivation and optimism as the earlier seasons. Believe in the beauty of a new day. Let today be the start of something new. Don’t wait for New Year to take up a new hobby or finish a project that you have started. Treat every day as a new opportunity to help you get closer to reaching your dreams.

My dream is to be the editor of my own successful feel-good lifestyle magazine, and I am one step closer to achieving this. Zest For Life started as an idea and now after a successful seven weeks, I’m starting to realise that my dream is not an impossible one. The Zest For Life blog is doing amazingly well and we now have a handful of writers that believe in our message to spread more positivity to the world.

I hope that we inspire you and that you enjoy reading the blog. The first issue is finally taking shape – we have our front cover and will be opening up submissions for content for the magazine on the 1st of November. All I have ever wanted to do with Zest For Life is make someone’s day a little brighter. I have my own struggles, but I believe in the power of being positive. I’m learning to adapt the philosophy ‘Live For Today’ and I’m driven by my passion for Zest For Life and what I want it to be.

If there is a fire burning inside of you to do something with your life, then do it. We all have a purpose. Even if you’re not sure what it is yet, spend every day doing something that makes you happy. Don’t be afraid to dream impossible dreams. Don’t let any other person stop you from reaching your true potential. Life is whatever you want it to be. We spend so much time worrying about the ‘perfect’ way to live our live, but perfection does not exist. Live life your way. Make the most of what you have but never stop wanting more. Smile even when you are close to tears. Look for the silver lining in any situation. Always be grateful. Tell people you love them. Never look back. Stay positive and enjoy every single moment of your life.

September 2015: Editor’s Note.

Dear followers,

First of all, I want to thank each and every one of you for starting this journey with us and believing in our mission to spread positivity and happiness to as many people as possible. Zest For Life is a brand new blog (soon to be magazine) and we need as much support as possible to get ourselves known, so don’t forget to share Zest For Life with all of your friends. We might only be a small publication right now but I have high hopes that once our first issue is released in January, more people will know about us and the message we want to share.

Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard once said ‘ Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced.’ This quote reminds me of a lesson I recently learned. I was focusing on everything I wanted in life instead of appreciating everything I had. I was thinking too much about the future instead of enjoying every day. We constantly bombard ourselves with doubts, insecurities and problems and blame it on life. Life is not the problem. Life can be anything you want it to be. Life should be experienced. Life should be appreciated. The most important lessons I have learned are that you have to believe in the power of today, you have to believe in your dreams and most importantly, you have to believe in yourself.

I’ve always wanted to run my own magazine and I was running out of excuses not to do it. I suddenly adapted a new philosophy in my life; whenever I found myself worrying too much about the future, I always told myself to ‘live for today.’ I remember hearing those three words in my head a few months ago and it really opened my eyes to the way I was choosing to live my life. That’s when Zest For Life was born. I wanted to create a magazine that was different. I wanted to give people good news for a change, show people that life can be amazing and encourage others to live a positive life.

I, like many others, have bad days but I always remind myself that a bad day is not a bad life. I try and focus on what I love about my life instead of focusing on the things I don’t have and the things I might never have. We are all human. We feel the same emotions. We make mistakes. We all have bad days. We all have one thing in common: we all want to be happy. I once thought happiness was unattainable, something you can only have when you are rich, successful and have a family of your own. But I now know that true happiness comes from within. You have to learn to be grateful, you have to be patient and see the beauty in the little things, make the most of every day and learn to accept that being happy is not a destination. It is a journey.

Autumn will be arriving soon. The summer days are drifting away as the nights are closing in. The leaves on the trees will soon be changing to beautiful shades of orange and red. It’s the perfect time for change, to try new things and to appreciate the beauty of every day. I hope you have a wonderful September, make time for yourself, drink hot chocolate, read books, spend time with family and friends and live each day with one goal in mind: to be happy.
